Facing Climate Change: An Overview of Adaptation Planning

Facing Climate Change: An Overview of Adaptation Planning
Ontario has been experiencing real impacts from climate change, with a record number of damaging floods from extreme rainfalls in recent years. Speakers from Ontario Climate Consortium (OCC) and the Regional Municipality of Durham will provide an overview of adaptation planning in Southern Ontario and DIY steps to prepare a municipal adaptation plan.

OCC - a flagship organization with a mandate to support the transition to low carbon, climate resilient communities in Ontario supports the development and implementation of climate change policy and innovative practices. Christine Tu, the Manager of OCC will provide an overview of federal, provincial and municipal adaptation planning activities that OCC has helped lead or support.

Mani Rajendran, leading the Roads Task Force of Regional Municipality of Durham's Community Climate Adaptation Planning, will go over the step-by-step process that the Region has developed to identify the vulnerable regional road assets and develop adaptation programs as well to prepare the Region to face climate change.

After attending this program, participants will be better able to:

  • Encourage and involve stakeholders from local communities to participate in the adaptation planning process including identifying key sectors that may be vulnerable to climate change and develop a mitigation/adaptation plan to address those risks.
  • Explain how to carry out a risk assessment on municipal assets that are vulnerable to climate change and develop adaptation programs to protect those assets against climate change.
  • Convince local governing bodies that Climate Change Planning can happen in parallel along with state/provincial or federal level initiatives.
