U.S. Senate Schedules DHS Nomination Hearing

The U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs will hold a hearing at 10:00 a.m. ET on January 19 to consider the nomination of President-elect Joe Biden’s pick, Alejandro Mayorkas, to serve as the next Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Mr. Mayorkas previously worked at DHS as a deputy secretary during the Obama Administration.

President-elect Biden can appoint acting heads of agencies while awaiting nominee confirmation. These acting heads are often senior career officials that will serve in this capacity until the nominee is ultimately confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Currently, Peter Gaynor, most recently the Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator, is leading DHS as the Acting Secretary.
