Grant Funding Available for Railway-Highway Crossings—Deadline October 26, 2020
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) recently released a notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) announcing $50 million in grant money available to commuter rail agencies for improving railway-highway crossings. The grants will be distributed through the Commuter Authority Rail Safety Improvement (CARSI) grants program.
Projects eligible for consideration are those that "separate or protect grades at crossings, rebuild existing railroad grade crossing structures, relocate highways to eliminate grade crossings, and eliminate hazards posed by blocked grade crossings due to idling trains."
Entities eligible to apply for these funds through the CARSI grant program must be a commuter authority that has had at least one crash investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2018, and about which a report was released.
