COVID-19 Emergency Response Act No. 2 Receives Royal Assent

On Saturday, April 11, Bill C-14, A second Act respecting certain measures in response to COVID-19, passed the House of Commons and Senate without amendment. The Bill received Royal Assent the same day.

The Bill implements, as part of the response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), additional measures for the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS). The CEWS, part of Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan, will provide a 75-per-cent wage subsidy to eligible employers (individuals, taxable corporations, partnerships consisting of eligible employers, non-profit organizations and registered charities) that see a drop of at least 15 per cent of their revenue in March 2020 and 30 per cent for the following months.

The subsidy aims to prevent further job losses and encourage employers to re-hire workers previously laid off and would be provided for up to 12 weeks, retroactive to March 15.
