DOT Announces New Drone Regulations

On February 12, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) posted a regulation titled, “External Marking Requirement for Small Unmanned Aircraft” which will impact drone usage. The new regulation will take effect on February 25, 2019.

The regulation would require all civilian drones add external markings so the owner can be more readily identified. Specifically drone owners will be required to place their registration number on the outside of their devices.  In 2015, when the Federal Aviation Administration (which has primary oversight over drones) first required drone owners to register their aircraft, it said the number could be placed within the battery compartment.
