President Trump Signs Law Requiring Upgraded Digital Flood Maps

On Friday, December 21, 2018 President Trump signed Public Law 115-358, the Strengthening Coastal Communities Act (H.R. 5787) into law. Originally introduced by Rep. Neal Dunn (R-FL), the bill instructsthe U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to use a new set of maps of more than two dozen coastal areas along the eastern coast of the United States.

Properties that now fall under the revised flood maps would be ineligible to participate in any federally subsidized program. This would include Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood insurance and mortgages guaranteed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. Additionally, approximately 500 properties located on the non-digital flood maps that the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service currently use, would no longer be listed.
