Bipartisan Bill Introduced to Fund Infrastructure in Distressed Areas
On June 14, Representatives Mike Kelly (R-PA), William Lacy Clay (D-MO), and Ted Budd (R-NC) introduced legislation (HR 6104
), the Generating American Income and Infrastructure (GAIIN) Act aimed at funding infrastructure improvement projects in poor neighborhoods. The GAIIN Act would direct the Department of Agriculture to sell its distressed assets on the open market in-order-to fund infrastructure projects in communities falling below the national poverty line. The Department of Treasury would be responsible for distributing the proceeds to qualifying communities. HR 6104 would also require that the workforce who would build the future projects, come from the communities being improved.
The bill has been referred to the House Agriculture Committee and the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee.
