APWA Supports Water Resiliency Legislation in House

On April 24, Representatives Salud Carbajal (D-CA) and Tom Reed (R-NY) introduced H.R. 5596, the Water Infrastructure Resiliency and Sustainability Act. The bill would create a federal program that offers competitive matching funds to help communities undertake projects to adapt their water infrastructure to extreme weather events and the long-term impacts of changing hydrological conditions. The legislation also encourages water systems to utilize innovative infrastructure approaches that will serve as models for other communities struggling with similar water management challenges.

APWA, along with 10 other water sector associations, signed a letter to the primary sponsors in support of the legislation. APWA is supportive of federal efforts to encourage communities across the country to build resiliency into their infrastructure today, while helping ensure uninterrupted water and wastewater service for the future.
