President Calls on Congress for Infrastructure Package
In his first official State of the Union Address, President Donald Trump called on Congress to “produce a bill that generates at least $1.5 trillion for the new infrastructure investment that our country desperately needs.” Speaking about rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure, the president said, “We will build gleaming new roads, bridges, highways, railways and waterways all across our land.”
As expected, the president’s speech mirrored the key tenets of a document
leaked last week, which called for federal investment, coupled with state and local funding, as well as private sector investment. The president also reiterated that any legislation Congress produces “must also streamline the permitting process, getting it down to no more than two years.”
APWA will continue to work with the Trump Administration and Congress to ensure that public works priorities are included in any infrastructure proposal.
