NHTSA Calls for Input on New Voluntary Guidance for Autonomous Vehicles

Last Friday, NHTSA published new voluntary guidance for autonomous vehicles entitled, Automated Driving Systems: A Vision for Safety. The new voluntary guidance is based on the public input NHTSA received in 2016 regarding its Federal Automated Vehicles Policy. NHTSA is again seeking public input through November 14, 2017.

Earlier in the week, Secretary Chao visited Ann Arbor, MI to announce the intention of the Trump Administration to use voluntary guidance, and not enforceable rules, when it comes to regulating autonomous vehicles. Secretary Chao stated that a flexible approach is best for emerging technologies, while also sharing that the Administration intends to give preference to projects that promise technological innovation, and improves safety in its pending infrastructure plan.
