DIY-Public Works Math 101: Calculating Concrete and Asphalt Kit

When it comes to calculating the amount of concrete to pour or asphalt to spread, you can’t afford an “oops!” moment because you over- or under-estimated how much you needed. If—like most of us—you slept through high school geometry, and “volume” refers to how loud the TV is, and “area” describes the rug on your dining room floor, APWA can help you brush up on your math skills. With "Public Works Math 101," you’ll be calculating area and volume in no time.

This interactive workshop provides participants with an understanding of the basic concepts of area and volume calculation using relevant public works examples and exercises to ensure mastery. After completing this course, participants will be better able to:

  • Identify the terminology and formulas that are used when calculating area and volume.
  • Calculate how many cubic yards of concrete would be needed to pave a given area, such as a driveway or parking lot.
  • Calculate how many tons of asphalt would be needed to pave a given area, such as a driveway or parking lot.
  • Explain the necessity for converting cubic feet to cubic yards (concrete) and pounds to tons (asphalt).

CEUs: eligible for .25 CEUs upon completion.
