Under general supervision of the Utilities Supervisor or more experienced Utilities Operator to perform various job tasks in support of the activities and operations of the Utilities Division of the Infrastructure Operations and Services Department. Specific, detailed procedures are established and available to the incumbent and must be followed at all times unless permission for change is obtained from the Supervisor. Performs routine manual labor tasks in the maintenance of water and sewer lines such as: Operates Vactor, Backhoe, Mini Excavator and Vac-tron equipment in the excavation of a water and/or sewer line repair; Operates concrete saw and jackhammer removing concrete; Backfills, preps and pours concrete of streets, alley’s and sidewalks; Services, repairs and replaces fire hydrants; Services, repairs and replaces water main valves; Reads, repairs and replaces water meters; Works with jet-rodder and TV camera crews. May provide on-the-job training or direction to less skilled workers. Cleans and maintains tools, equipment, and all work areas. Uses various hand tools and equipment such as shovels, picks, wrenches, pipe cutters, metal detector, leak detector and operates gas-powered saws, water pumps and blowers. Uses cutting torch. Drives pickup and dump trucks; loads and hauls sand, dirt and debris. May pick up needed supplies and deliver to the job site. Prepares required forms and paperwork. Responsible to learn department procedures and safety practices and to obtain the necessary licensing.
