The City of San Gabriel is seeking an Auto Mechanic I/II who is energetic, motivated, a self-starter, and eager to learn and grow in a fast-paced working environment.  The ideal candidate will have excellent attention to detail, be customer service driven, goal oriented, and possess in-depth automotive repair knowledge.


Under direction of the Fleet Manager, the Auto Mechanic I/II tunes up, services, and makes major mechanical repairs to automobiles, trucks, tractors, and aerial equipment, and performs other auto mechanic tasks as assigned; and maintains and repairs air conditioners, cooling systems, engines, clutches, transmissions, drive lines, rear ends, brakes, suspension, and electrical on automobiles, trucks, tractors, and aerial equipment, including special equipping of emergency vehicles.  The Auto Mechanic II classification is distinguished  from the Auto Mechanic I by its increased level of autonomy and responsibility for performing more complex work. Availability for emergency call back and weekend standby are required.


A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be at least two (2) years of related experience for an Auto Mechanic I and five (5) years for an Auto Mechanic II in the overall repair of automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment.  For both classifications, a high school diploma or GED equivalent, possession of a valid California Driver's License, and ability to obtain a Class "B" License with one year of appointment and maintain a satisfactory driving record is required.
