The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) is seeking an experienced land development professional for the position of Director, Land Development Services (LDS). This director is responsible for leading the county's regulatory review, inspection, and enforcement programs for all land-disturbing and building construction activities.
The director is a strong leader with proven ability to work with multiple stakeholders, boards, associations, residents, county staff and build positive relationships in a dynamic regulatory environment. The director provides leadership to LDS staff, develops strategic goals, and creates a positive work culture that enables LDS divisions/branches to meet short-term and long-range strategic objectives. The position serves as a member of the DPWES executive team.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, urban and regional planning, business administration, public administration, or a related field; plus ten years of progressively responsible public works and/or environmental services management experience, four years of which must have been in a management or supervisory capacity.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated experience leading a large and diverse organization and creating a positive work environment that respects and grows the talents of its employees, setting a high standard of performance, and developing staff for succession planning. Ability to understand the challenges of applying regulations in a community that values protecting existing neighborhoods while creating new urban centers focused on redevelopment, revitalization, and infill. Proven experience working with diverse local government agencies with complex operational requirements. Ability to balance and reconcile competing perspectives and make decisions in a highly complex development arena. Solid budget and financial management experience. Proven experience establishing, maintaining and sustaining partnerships with multiple stakeholders, elected and appointed officials, associations, and other county staff. Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with elected officials, staff, industry stakeholders, and the public.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: Driver's license.
