Under functional supervision, will plan, organize, supervise and review the operation, maintenance and repair infrastructure within public rights-of-way including, but not limited to: asphalt pavement, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, pedestrian ramps, concrete pavement, street lights, signs, storm drains, and pavement striping.
The ideal candidate for this position will have excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills, foster a collaborative, team-oriented work environment, and balance the concerns for and from people with focus on business results.

We are seeking the candidate who demonstrates successful experience in the following areas: supervising a comprehensive program for assigned functional areas; preparing and implementing preventive maintenance programs; use of performance measurement systems-maintenance assessment program and incorporating continuous improvement plans from the public and City staff. The candidate must be able to operate assigned equipment with skill and safety as well as supervise and perform skilled work within area of assignment.

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Select, train, and evaluate assigned personnel; monitor work flow; assign and prioritize work activities.
  • Utilize computerized work order systems to generate and assign work; monitor productivity and materials usage; create and maintain programmatic maintenance schedules.
  • Oversee the accuracy and maintenance of time, material, and equipment use records.
  • Requisition supplies and materials and monitor inventories.
  • Receive, investigate and resolve customer service calls from internal and external customers. 
  • Inspect work sites before, during and after completion to assure quality expectations in work completion.
  • Collect data necessary to prepare division budget.  Monitor and approve expenditures.
  • Assist in preparation of variety of bid specifications and contract documents. Act as project manager and contract administrator.
  • Coordinate field services and maintenance activities with private property owners, outside agencies, and other city departments/divisions.
  • Ensure the maintenance of various records and prepare reports as required.
  • Duties include maintenance, construction and/or repair of streets, improving the quality of streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters and other related facilities and equipment.   Accountable for traffic control, street lighting, and signage during these activities.
  • The majority of contracts generated by the department are pavement and concrete rehabilitation contracts and painting contracts. The Public Works Supervisor manages many of the assigned projects through contractors



 Knowledge of:

  •  Modern methods, practices, materials, equipment, and tools used in planning and maintenance of assigned division of public works department
  •  Applicable state and local codes and regulations related to assigned work
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work
  • Principles of organization, administration, budget and personnel management


  • Supervise a maintenance and operations program for one or more dissimilar functional areas
  • Determine cost-effective ways for efficient and effective operation of a maintenance program
  • Supervise the maintenance of records and prepare reports
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate subordinates
  • Read and interpret construction plans and specifications
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships

 Experience & Educations: 

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way of gaining the knowledge and abilities outlined above is equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade and supplemented by course work or specialized training in construction, civil engineering and construction-related subjects.

 An Associates degree in a related field is highly desirable. Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in the assigned area, including two years in a lead or supervisory capacity.
