The Principal Engineer is a senior management position in the Plans & Public Works Department in the City of Monterey. The selected individual will be assigned to the Capital Projects Division and is responsible for all aspects of the Neighborhood Improvement Program.

The City of Monterey has a Neighborhood Improvement Program that includes approximately 118 capital improvement projects, with an estimated value of $8.6 million, in need of completion. Approved and funded projects include street widening, storm drain repair, and beautification and enhancement in residential neighborhoods. At the center of this Principal Engineer's responsibility is eliminating the backlog of projects and coordinating the planning efforts of the Neighborhood Improvement Committee.

The ideal candidate for this position must possess the ability to manage a variety of neighborhood improvement projects that range from small park projects to complex traffic calming and pedestrian circulation developments. The selected candidate will be a proven project manager whose track record clearly identifies his exceptional and seasoned project management skills.


Any combination equivalent to experience and education that likely provides the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Civil Engineering.

Experience: Five years of verifiable professional civil engineering work experience, which includes at least two years of supervisory and administrative experience.
