Assistant Public Works Director
Liberty, MO (pop. 30,000) ideally located northeast of Kansas City on Interstate 35; Liberty enjoys easy access to the amenities of the big city, while preserving the atmosphere of a small town. Founded in 1822 and named for the principle that Americans hold most dear, Liberty is the second oldest incorporated town west of the Mississippi River. Liberty has a traditional downtown square that is the heart of the community, despite rapid commercial growth around the city’s perimeter. The downtown has been fortunate to retain the City’s public facilities and services, such as City Hall and the Police Department, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Clay County Courthouse, Sheriff’s Department, and administrative offices. There are consistent and strong partnerships between the City, County, Chamber of Commerce, the Main Street program and the Partnership for Community Growth and Development.
The Public Works Department is responsible for engineering services, street and storm sewer operations, facilities maintenance and environmental services. The department reviews improvements in all of these categories as well as administers capital improvement contracts for construction, prepares technical specifications and contract documents for public improvements, provides public improvement construction inspections, issues permits for public works projects and for work within the public right of way, repairs and maintains 160 centerline miles of roadways, storm drainage systems, pavement markings and traffic signals and oversees a comprehensive solid waste management program.
The City of Liberty is dedicated to providing the highest level of services to ensure an exceptional quality of life for our community. We are seeking executive management level candidates for the Assistant Public Works Director position. The Department has 20 full time employees and currently a $2.4 million general fund budget and a project fund budget of $14.3 million.
Candidates must possess equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in civil engineering, public administration, business administration or related field plus 5 years increasingly responsible experience in public works management. Candidates should have ability to perform city engineer functions, strong financial skills, high understanding and experience in development, project management, street maintenance management, excellent communication skills and team leadership skills. Additional critical skills include consensus building among citizens, elected officials and employees and decisive decision making. Licensed engineer and public sector experience preferred.
Salary begins at $90,000 DOQ, plus full benefits package.
