Engineering Services/Engineering Division/Public Works Department

Pay Band 205:  (hiring range: $33,943-$44,126)

This position will be responsible for performing a wide variety of technical office functions in support of Registered Professional Engineers.  These responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the processing of water and sewer connection applications;   doing preliminary design work for potential water and sewer projects; performing court house and on line property records research; the drawing and preparation of legal notes for proposed utility projects; assisting customers on a daily basis with numerous Engineering issues as they relate to water, sewer, and street improvements; preparing Departmental assessment projects; provides technical support on various Departmental projects; organizes and maintains various Departmental files.  Other duties as assigned.

Assignments will be received from the Engineering Services Supervisor and will require independent judgment and initiative.  All work shall be performed under general supervision.


  • High School diploma or equivalent supplemented by college or technical school courses in civil engineering.  
  • At least one year of experience in engineering and surveying, with 4-5 years preferred.  Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be evaluated.
  • A valid North Carolina Class “C” driver’s license.

Special Requirements:

  • 1 - 2 years experience in property research through court house and on-line records.
  • Ability to read and understand plans, interpret grade and elevations.
  • Ability to read and understand legal property descriptions and draw boundary maps from these descriptions
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, GIS information systems and MUNIS applications preferred
