CITY ENGINEER

NATURE OF WORK:

This is a senior professional management level position requiring management, administrative and technical skills in order to direct the engineering activities and business aspects of the City Engineer’s office and oversee daily execution of a variety of activities carried out by engineering personnel. The position has oversight responsibilities for designing, planning and maintaining roads, buildings, drainage, bridges - including mechanical moving bridges and other city infrastructure in accordance with the City’s Charter and Ordinances. Work involves directing a professional staff that provides technical assistance to all departments, agencies, boards, and commissions of the city. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief Administrative Officer and is reviewed through conferences and evaluation of results. Position is appointed by the Mayor and serves a term in accordance with the City Charter.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with emphasis on civil engineering, transportation, environment or related field; possess a Professional Engineer License in the State of Connecticut with a Masters Degree in Public or Business Administration, and at least five years of related experience involving municipal construction projects; and an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills, including but not limited to Considerable knowledge of the principles of engineering, management planning, budgeting and administration for construction projects. Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and orally with the public, department heads, contractors, engineers, state and federal agencies and other groups as necessary. Extensive knowledge of the principles of engineering practices associated with the maintenance of roads, bridges, sidewalks, buildings and drainage facilities. Ability to plan and direct others in implementing maintenance programs and projects. Considerable knowledge of State Department of Transportation and State Department of Environmental and Energy Protection organization, procedures, programs and requirements.

Must obtain residency in the City of New Haven within six months of hire date.
