Lake County is seeking a full-time highway design engineer. This position will function as a design project team member, bringing to completion highway improvement design projects to satisfy an average $50M annual Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) construction budget. Responsibilities include the review of phase I and phase II engineering deliverables produced by outside design consultants or in-house design staff, and also the development of plans, specifications, and estimates for in-house design projects. Occasional field work and public meeting attendance will be required. Direction is received from LCDOT Department Heads or the County Engineer.
In order to be successful in this position, the candidate must have strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to work well in a team environment; the ability to develop a project scope of work; the ability to develop complete plans, specifications, and cost estimates; plan and specification review expertise; proficient in GEOPAK or InRoads and MicroStation; familiarity with Illinois Department of Transportation and/or AASHTO design criteria; proficient in storm sewer, culvert, and detention basin design
Candidates with the following skills are a plus. Experience using public domain hydrology and hydraulics programs; familiarity with the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission Watershed Development Ordinance; ADAAG and PROWAG familiarity related to bike path and sidewalk construction; utility coordination expertise; Army Corps of Engineers wetland permitting experience; ability to read and interpret plats and legal descriptions; ability to read and interpret geotechnical reports; ability to read and interpret traffic studies and intersection design studies
We are looking for an individual who has completed a baccalaureate degree program in Civil Engineering from an approved college or university of recognized standing. Additionally, six years of progressive professional engineering experience in highway and bike path design preferred. This individual must possess a valid driver’s license and possess a license as a Professional Engineer issued by the State of Illinois. Applicants holding licensure from another state may apply, but must secure an Illinois license within six months of hiring.
