Jefferson County, Alabama is seeking a highly qualified and competent professional to serve as its first Deputy County Manager for Infrastructure. Starting salary up to $150,000

Jefferson County, seated in Birmingham, is Alabama's largest metropolitan area. This vibrant, beautiful region is nestled in the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and serves up nationally recognized dining, shopping and entertainment, world-class attractions, events and other things to see and do. Two dozen universities, colleges and technical schools are located within a one hour drive of downtown Birmingham, with a combined enrollment of more than 90,000 students.

The County Commission is the governing body of Jefferson County with five Commissioners elected from districts for concurrent four-year terms. In recognition of and a tribute to good government, five new reform-minded Commissioners were elected on November 2, 2010 with a commitment and determination to transform the county governance and organization from its environment with evidence of corruption and financial mismanagement to a government with a solid foundation of ethical conduct, financial stability, vibrant economic development, and efficient delivery of county services.

The new Deputy County Manager of Infrastructure reports directly to the County Manager and will have responsibility for the following specific areas of service: Environmental Services, Roads & Transportation, General Services, Land Planning & Development, Inspection Services, and Storm Water Management. Working with the County Manager and various stakeholders throughout the County, the Deputy County Manager of Infrastructure will address issues related to personnel staffing and management, strategic and technical guidance, and compliance with Federal, State, local laws, and court decrees to which the County is party.

The Deputy County Manager of Infrastructure shall possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Construction Science, or a closely related field and a minimum of seven (7) years management experience in the public sector including experience working in design, contracting, project management, and/or large scale projects such as roads, bridges, wastewater systems or other large facilities, with at least five (5) of those years in a senior management capacity, such as a Deputy City/County Manager, Department Head; OR a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field and a minimum of five (5) years of management experience in the public sector; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. In addition to valid driver’s license (required), a Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
