Superintendent – Waste Collection Operations

Reporting to the Manager of Waste Collection, you will be an integral part of the Waste Management Collection Section, with responsibility for developing, planning, organizing, controlling, coordinating, supervising, and providing leadership for the day-to-day operations of the City of Hamilton’s curb side waste collection and cleanliness programs. As Superintendent of Waste Collection Operations, you will be expected to design and implement strategies to improve effectiveness and efficiency, set above-average standards and lead by example.

Your qualifications as Superintendent – Waste Collection Operations include:

  • Demonstrable knowledge and expertise in the area of curb side waste collection and cleanliness.
  • A degree or diploma in a related discipline such as Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, etc., as well as certification with the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) would be considered assets.
  • Highly effective skills as a team leader and supervisor, focused on customer service and skilled in organization, program planning and design, budget management, delegation, communication (oral, written, listening), conciliation, and maintaining a desirable workplace culture.
  • Thorough understanding of the technical and operational aspects of curb side waste collection and cleanliness programs, as well as statutes (i.e., Occupational Health & Safety Act of Ontario), regulations and by-laws governing program activities and operations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a complex, unionized public service organization with various stakeholders, regulators, elected officials and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a workplace culture of excellence and commitment to continuous improvement in the provision of waste collection service.
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills.
  • Competency with the MS Office Suite of computer programs.
  • A valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence, or eligibility to obtain one.
