The Civil Engineer performs professional civil engineering work including design layout and plan review. Assignments require application of independent judgment and initiative in the design or review of projects. This position reports directly to the Senior Civil Engineer. The Civil Engineer may supervise the work performed by technical or paraprofessional engineering staff.

Position requires a valid driver's license, a minimum of one year of experience in a related field, and a Bachelor's degree, although equivalent additional work experience may be substituted for education.

The ideal candidate for this position will have an Engineer in Training (EIT) certification, two or more years of experience in a related field, and a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering related field. The ideal candidate will also be a self motivator; possess excellent interpersonal/human relations skills; and demonstrate great writing, comprehension, and computer literacy skills.

EXAMINATION PROCESS:
Only a limited number of the most highly qualified applicants meeting the City's requirements will be invited for an interview. Examination process for this position will include:

FIRST YEAR OBJECTIVES

Within the first week:

Complete the city-wide orientation sessions as evidenced by attendance at all sessions of GEO.

Within 1 month:

Review and become familiar with the City's Engineering Design Standards and Policies Manual, Standard Details, GYMaps, Electronic Plan Review program, MAG engineering standards and details, and other documents used in typical engineering and planning reviews.Become familiar with and assist in the review and preparation of comments for an engineering and planning review.

Within 3 months:

Become familiar with the City's master plans including; General Plan, Transportation Plan, Integrated Water Master Plan (IWMP), and Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).Complete multiple planning and engineering reviews under the direction of the Senior Civil Engineer.Become familiar with the program to update the City's Standard Details and Engineering Design Standards & Policies Manual.

Within 6 months:

Complete multiple planning and engineering reviews with minimal direction and convey comments orally to the Development Policy Committee.Update the planning review checklists.Participate in the Standards and Materials Committee.

Within 12 months:

Assist in the design, review, and management of a City Capital Improvement project.Provide general assistance as needed to the City Engineer, Assistant City Engineer, and Senior Civil Engineer.
