THE POSITION: Under general direction, lays out, assigns, coordinates, and supervises the work of several crews engaged in public work maintenance and construction work. The Public Works Supervisor reports to the Public Works Maintenance Manager and supervises the work of Crew Leaders, Senior Maintenance Workers, Cement Finisher and Maintenance Workers and other staff as assigned. The Public Works Supervisor directs the work of crews assigned to various streets, sewers, storm drains, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, catch basins, approaches, other public works projects and programs and assures compliance with plans, specifications and standards. The incumbent also inspects all excavations within the public right-of-way and inspects materials used in the construction of various public street installations and other duties as assigned.
The Public Works Maintenance Supervisor instructs employees in work and safety methods and in the proper use of equipment, machinery, and tools; recommends methods for improving work and correcting unfavorable public works conditions; requisitions materials, supplies, and equipment for project work; maintains records of time and materials used on various jobs; serves as liaison between City and residents concerning trash collection; keeps reports and records of work in progress and completed; and assists in preparing departmental budget. The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively with department heads, employees and the public and supervise and evaluate the performance of subordinates effectively.
QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of street and related public works maintenance and construction work thorough knowledge of materials, equipment, and practices used in street, sewer, storm drain and related structures; inspection methods and legal requirements for public works construction; and the elements of supervision Skills/Abilities: Ability to use a personal computer for report preparation and maintenance of records; establish and maintain effective working relationships; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; read and interpret plans and specifications; train and supervise staff in equipment operation in the various aspects of street repair and other public works construction and maintenance. Education and Experience – Any combination of experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be graduation from high school or equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in supervision practices and four years experience in construction, maintenance work or related labor or skilled work. Physical requirements – Requires some physical effort including bending, stooping, climbing and lifting items weighing 20-100 lbs. Tasks may be performed in inclement weather. Licenses/Certificates - Possession of a valid Class “B” California Motor Vehicle Operator's License is desirable.
