General Statement of Duties: A Civil Engineer performs professional engineering work in the investigation, development, design, construction and maintenance of engineering projects. Work assignments are usually broad in scope and require use of mature judgement in making decisions of appreciable difficulty. Assignmaents are made and work is reviewed by the City Engineer or Civil Engineer of a higher grade, and major technical or policy problems are discussed with them before action is taken.
Required: Bachelor of Science Degree from a recognized college or university in Civil Engineering
Minimum six years of progressive engineering and supervisory experience
Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the state of Michigan
Licenses: A valid Michigan Vehicle Operator's Permit
Qualifications for Emplyment: Thorogh knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and methods as applicable to a municipal setting.
Thorough knowledge of modern methods and techniques as applied to the design, construction and maintenance of public works
Knowledge of applicable city policies, laws, and regulations affecting division activities.
Some knowledge of computer aided design and drafting (CAD) (AutoCAD and/or MicroStation preferred) and ability to use computer data bases and Geographic Information Systems.
Ability to make field engineering surveys.
Ability to perform technical research work on difficult engineering problems and to design public work projects.
Ability to supervise civil engineering projects, engineering consultants and staff.
Ability to understand and carry out complex written or oral directions.
Ability to communicate effectively and to maintain cooperative relations with the public and other employees.
Ability to prepare clear and comprehensive reports.
A valid driver’s license.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: A Civil Engineer may be called upon to do any or all of the following:

Design roads, sewers, water mains, park and building improvements, parking lots, storm water detention and other public facilities.
Prepare plans, designs, layouts and specifications for proposed construction projects and prepare estimates of costs,specifications and assessment districts.
Make preliminary field surveys for public improvements, such as sewers, water mains, pavements, sidewalks, public buildings, etc.
Make surveys for public improvements, including cross sections, stakes for line and grades, final measurements and computations of quantities.
Oversee and review engineering work done by consultants for the City.
Make preliminary and final estimates for payments to private contractors.
Supervise the construction and inspection of public improvements.
Conduct special surveys and prepare reports for specific purposes.
Prepare and submit activity reports, engineering studies, grant applications, permits and proposals
Interact with property developers, their engineers and property owners.
Perform other work as assigned.
