The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state's road, bridges, tunnels and ferries. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it also provides funding for airports, rail, and public transportation. Virginia has the third largest state-maintained highway system in the country covering 58,321 miles of interstate, primary, secondary and frontage roads. Staunton District Bridge Section is seeking a senior structural/geotechnical engineer to work in the Bridge Design Group. Position will work under minimal supervision on more complex, non-routine structural and foundation design issues and situations; apply sound engineering principles to independently resolve issues; oversee and/or assist junior level engineers; provide technical assistance; and work with consulting firm engineers. Position will review structural and/or fabrication plans by other designers to ensure accuracy of content design, conformance to standards, and cost estimates. Position serves as a project manager for multiple bridge projects and may be designated as the "responsible charge" for reviewing and approving work prepared by private firms and in-house staff. Design complex structures and bridges using computer analysis and manual calculations; prepare repair plans with consideration to economic requirements; prepare cost estimates.

P.E. license.Comprehensive knowledge of bridge nomenclature; structural analysis; reinforced concrete design; steel design; geotechnical engineering; foundation design and construction; prestressed concrete design; design procedures; drafting techniques; plan preparation; and estimating.Skilled in the use of computers and software applications; bridge design programs; CADD; project scheduling programs.Sound analytical skills related to bridge design with the ability to work independently in resolving highly complex questions and problems.Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing); coordinate activities with others; design complex bridge structure components; and apply bridge engineering principles to complex, unique assignments.Demonstrated progressively responsible experience working under minimal supervision; in depth design or construction of complex bridges/structures with exposure to major aspects of bridge and foundation design, construction, maintenance, repair; and successfully performing project management.Experience working on multiple projects requiring coordination with other disciplines and competing priorities.Experience in providing technical leadership and training at an expert level to engineers and staff.
