GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES;
Performs a variety of mechanical work of a complex nature requiring the use of considerable judgment in the repair and maintenance of municipal vehicles and equipment.
EXAMPLES OF WORK;
Repairs and maintains municipal vehicles and equipment including standard and specialized equipment.
Performs body work, welding, painting, and mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and metal work in repairing municipal vehicles and equipment.
Operates various tools including electric welders, oxygen and acetylene welders, air drills, hoists and torches; operates engine tune-up and diagnostic equipment; operates related equipment as required.
Performs preventable maintenance operations and maintains necessary records to permit scheduling equipment for prescribed maintenance procedures. Intermittently operates all motor equipment units for maintenance purposes.
Performs other related duties as required; subject to emergency recall as required.
Establishes and implements a coordinated preventive maintenance program for all equipment and vehicles; schedules service and inspections for vehicles; performs tune-ups; changes oils and fluids; checks brakes and lights; checks and repairs tires; performs inspections and issues inspection stickers; determines road readiness of vehicles.
Maintains complete records of repairs, service, state safety inspections, and tests performed for each vehicles; orders parts and supplies and maintains inventory of stock; processes and maintains records of bills received; monitors expenditures of Motor Maintenance division.
May occasionally operate heavy equipment and trucks under emergency conditions; may operate snowplow and sander for snow removal operations.
Oversees the operation and maintenance of the repair shop; assigns subordinates to repair and maintenance tasks; assists and instructs subordinates and checks their work.
Owns all tools.
Supervises one full-time employee performing similar duties.
Errors could result in damage to costly equipment or in failure of equipment under operating conditions, potentially causing injury to employees.
Frequent moderate to strenuous physical effort required to perform duties under shop conditions; constant exposure to unpleasant and hazardous conditions, including dangerous chemical and fumes.
