The City of Commerce is an industrial city located six miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It has a residential population of approximately 13,000 and a daytime employment population of 50,000. The City is a small community, and its 6.5 square miles serves as a regional center of employment in the Los Angeles Basin with over 17,000 businesses. The City is seeking a highly skilled Public Works and Development Services Director with the ability to hit the ground running. An individual who is engaging, compassionate, a good mentor, and communicates openly will excel in this position. Commerce will benefit from a Director who effectively anticipates future issues and determines what course of action the City should take. The City places importance on customer service and community relations. The Public Works and Development Services Director will be looked upon to provide leadership to the Department to ensure professional interaction with the Council, residents, and other department heads. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and possess the ability to keep track of the progress for all projects without micromanaging. This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, Public Administration or Urban Planning, or a related field; and five years experience in public works, capital improvement projects, land use, and facilities management. The City will be looking at a multi-million dollar long term capital improvement plan beginning in 2014. This plan will focus on all facets of the City’s infrastructure. Accreditation as a professional engineer is highly desirable as is a graduate education in a related field. Proven experience in the delivery of a multi-year capital improvement program is a requisite. The salary range for the Public Works and Development Services Director is $132,254 to $161,137 and is dependent upon qualifications. The City offers an attractive benefits package.
