The City of Prairie Village is seeking a dedicated, responsive, and experienced individual for its next Public Works Director. Minimum qualifications for the position include graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in business, public administration, civil engineering, or a closely related field, 5 years of progressively responsible public works experience, or any combination of education and experience; considerable knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices and methods as applicable to a municipal setting. This position is responsible for the direction, planning, management, supervision, and review of the activities and operations of the City Public Works Department including capital projects, streets, drainage, grounds, and municipal buildings and swimming pool complex. The position is responsible for managing and motivating a staff of 28 full-time employees. This position oversees all financial aspects of the Public Works Department operation, preparing the annual Department budget, capital improvement budget, and applying for appropriate grants and other outside funding opportunities.

This position is appointed by the Mayor, by and with the consent of the City Council. The appointee must become a resident of Johnson County, Kansas, within two years of hire. Residency within Prairie Village if preferred.

Prairie Village has a population of approximately 21,511. It is one of 19 municipalities in Johnson County and is the sixth largest in population.

The City Administrator coordinates all City services and departments, formulates policy recommendations, supports City committees and boards, prepares the annual budget for Council approval, and manages all City assets. Department managers coordinate operations and staff assigned to their departments.

The starting salary will be market competitive, depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected individual. The salary range will be in the range of $86,237 to $129,355 per annum.
