 Director of Street Services

The City of Dallas is currently seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Director of Street Services. This is an at-will position that reports to the Assistant City Manager.  

The objectives of the Street Services Department include Quality, Delivery, Efficiency and Customer Satisfaction.  The departmental policy is “To pursue continual improvement in our delivery of customer service with its commitment to comply with requirements by efficiently using all available resources to enhance the vitality and quality of life for all in the Dallascommunity.”  The department consists of various divisions, which include: Street Repair, Service Maintenance Areas, Transportation Operations, and Contract Finance & Inspections (CFI). The purpose of the Director of Street Services position is to plan, organize and direct the overall management, administration, operation and maintenance of the Street Services department.  This includes department facilities, equipment, budget, policies and procedures to maintain the department. 

 

The Ideal Candidate

  • Must be a dynamic, decisive, and visionary leader with solid management skills and have the ability to motivate others and be visible to employees throughout the department
  • Must have keen business acumen
  • Must possess thorough knowledge of business principles, practices and techniques used in department management
  • Must be knowledgeable of the principles of public administration
  • Must have knowledge of principles of personnel management and the ability to plan, direct, and coordinate the work of others through subordinates
  • Must have the ability to work effectively with a diversified group of individuals
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other government agencies, other employees and with the general public
  • Must have ability to develop and implement strategic planning
  • Must be an effective communicator, both verbally and in writing, with an ability to listen, influence and persuade others 
  • Must have the ability to make technical presentations easily understood by non-technical audiences and have the ability to communicate effectively on controversial subjects
  • Must communicate with the media effectively
  • Must have a record of promoting superior customer service among employees, customers, citizens, the media, and other governmental agencies, in all aspects of service delivery
  • Must have a reputation as an open-minded, forward thinking, innovative, and creative problem solver
  • Must have a track record of absolute integrity and honesty in professional and personal matters

 

Education & Experience

Qualified applicants must have a Bachelor’s Degree plus significant years of experience in senior management of a street services facility; or a combination of specified education and experience will qualify. Candidate must also be familiar with the budgeting for outcome strategies. Candidate must read and be familiar with “The Price of Government: Getting the Results We Need in an Age of Permanent Fiscal Crisis” by David Osborne and Peter Hutchinson.  Previous management and supervisory experience required. The individual must have an established track record for effectively working with city councils or other boards, state and federal agency personnel, citizens, community groups, other city departments, employee unions/advocates, and the media. 

 

Compensation

Salary range for this position is $106,487 - $172,662 annually. In addition the City provides an excellent management benefit package.
