Incorporated in 1850, the City and County of San Francisco is a consolidated City and County, a status it has held since 1856. It is the only such consolidation in the state of California.
The Department of Building Inspection (DBI) was created by voter referendum under Proposition G in 1994. It has a 2012-2013 proposed budget of $52.1 million with 272 FTEs. The charter amendment established the body known as the Building Inspection Commission (BIC) which was designed to provide representation for the various communities which interact with the Building Department. The BIC appoints the Director of the Department of Building Inspection.
The Director of Building Inspection safeguards the life and property of the citizens of San Francisco by enforcing the City’s building, housing, plumbing, electrical and mechanical codes, and the disability access regulations.
Requires a bachelor’s degree in architecture, civil engineering, construction management, public policy, business administration, or closely related field and six years management experience in the administration of building codes and other construction codes.
