The City of Ames is seeking a Fleet Technician to perform journey-level fleet mechanical service and repair on heavy duty trucks, heavy equipment, utility trucks, automobiles, hydraulic systems, turf equipment, construction equipment, and related work on a diverse fleet of equipment as required.

Examples of Essential Job Functions: Evaluates, troubleshoots, analyzes, and tests a wide variety of heavy equipment, truck, and automotive systems to determine the nature and extent of defects; replaces, repairs, and overhauls automotive and heavy equipment components such as engines, transmissions, front and rear end assemblies, power steering and braking mechanisms, electronic engine and systems controls, hydraulic systems and worn or defective parts; performs routine scheduled and preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment; performs computerized data entry to include work orders, work schedules, and logs; works directly with vendors; performs all job functions in a safe manner; and provides excellent customer service to internal and external customers. 

Other Job Functions: Modifies or fabricates new parts as necessary; maintains shop and building(s); maintains tools and equipment in a safe, clean, and usable condition; assists in ordering and maintaining parts for repair work; transports vehicles or equipment to and from service vendors, dealerships, or local facilities; reads blueprints, schematics, and manuals for equipment repair and maintenance; welds and fabricates for other city departments as necessary; uses a variety of diagnostic equipment; repairs specialty equipment such as emergency vehicles, hydraulic aerial lifts, small engine devices, and trailers;  repairs and maintains vehicle air systems and equipment; participates in project teams as required; complies with safety policies of the City of Ames and the Fleet Services department; and supplies own tools required to perform essential job functions.

Education and Experience: Successful completion of high school or GED, plus two years of technical training at the post-high school level; and four years of experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline or diesel powered automotive or heavy equipment engines and their related systems, including at least two years at the journey level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  (Four years experience as a City of Ames Mechanic Assistant or Mechanic will be considered to meet the experience portion of this requirement).  In addition, must have successfully completed any four ASE certification tests in the Master Automotive Technician series or Master Medium/Heavy Truck series, or possess certifications that are equal, but not less than these.

Licenses and Certificates: Must obtain valid type A Commercial Driver's License with required endorsements within 60 calendar days of appointment.  Must obtain ASE certifications as a Master Automotive Technician and as a Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician within 36 months (or six ASE testing periods) of appointment.  All certifications must be maintained.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Necessary to Perform Essential Functions: Knowledge of the operation, repair, and maintenance of automobile systems such as engines, transmissions, front and rear end assemblies, power steering and braking mechanisms, hydraulic and electrical systems, body and framework, knowledge of the safe use and care of tools and equipment used in maintaining and repairing automotive equipment; knowledge of the tools, equipment, and procedures involved in welding as related to the automotive, construction equipment,  and snow handling maintenance field.

Skill in using automotive and heavy equipment diagnostic, testing, and precision measuring equipment; skill in diagnosing automotive and heavy equipment systems in order to determine the nature and extent of defects and malfunctions; skill in the safe and efficient use of shop power tools and equipment, including welding; skill in the safe operation of automotive vehicles.

Ability to independently diagnose, repair, replace, and adjust a variety of automotive or heavy equipment operating systems; ability to maintain appropriate records of maintenance work performed; ability to read and interpret technical manuals, related diagrams, and instructions; ability to perform mathematical calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, and fractions; ability to perform work in accordance with established time and safety standards under undesirable working conditions; ability to safely use welding tools and equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers; ability to use automated sources of  technical support such as CD Rom and Internet.

Selection Process: A limited number of candidates will be invited to an oral board interview and preference may be given to those candidates whose qualifications exceed the minimum qualifications. Note: Persons with disabilities must submit requests for ADA testing accommodations to the Human Resources Department, in writing, prior to the application deadline.

Residency Requirement: The required residence area is the area bordered by the Boone and Story County lines on the north and south, State Highway 65 on the east; and on the west, County Road R27 north of Boone, and the Des Moines River south of Highway 30 to the Boone County line. Communities intersected by the borderlines, and Zearing, shall be considered within the area. The permitted residency area is that area inside the borderlines. The area adjacent to but outside the borderlines is not included.

E-Verify Process: The City of Ames participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each applicant's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.
