POSITION
Under general supervision, performs technical and para-professional engineering work related to capital improvements, private development projects, public works projects, and related improvements in the field or office. Provides information and assistance to the public regarding assigned programs and services. Performs applications design, analysis, and database development utilizing geographic information system (GIS) technology; performs a variety of GIS functions in the office and field including operating and maintaining the GIS system, developing and maintaining digital base maps, developing and updating GIS databases and applications.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties will include, but are not limited to: performing traffic counts, preparing traffic studies, performing plan checks, performing engineering research, assisting the public, assisting in the administration of contracts, preparation of professional level documents, preparation of exhibits for use with projects, performing variety of CAD work for engineering and exhibit purposes, subdivision map review, assisting in the administration of the pavement management program, processing As-Builts, composing GIS data and exhibits, assisting engineering staff on projects, and other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Graduation from high school or equivalent. Must be able to perform the physical elements of the job, as required.

HOURS
The incumbent’s work schedule will be established by the supervisor.

SELECTION GUIDELINES
A valid Class C California Driver License with a satisfactory driving record is required, not subject to waiver. Availability to work weekends and/or flexible work schedule is necessary. An oral examination will be administered to determine eligibility. Background check including pre-employment physical, fingerprints, and driver’s license check will be required upon selection.

THE CITY: The City of San Marcos is located amid chaparral-clad hills in Northern San Diego County. The City enjoys year-round sunny days and, as the Pacific Ocean is only 12 miles to the west, an average annual temperature of 71 degrees. Within an hour’s drive, one can access the San Diego Metropolitan area and the Cleveland National Forest, as well as San Diego County’s coastal communities and beaches. Incorporated in 1963, the current population is approximately 90,000 and its boundaries cover 24 square miles. The City is responsible for public services, with the exception of the water and sewer function. The City also has excellent educational facilities and is home to Palomar Community College and Cal State University San Marcos.

City offices are conveniently located just off the 78 freeway and steps away from the Sprinter station, restaurants, and the County Library. City employees also enjoy convenient access to fitness amenities.
