DESCRIPTION:
The Village of Glenview has one (1) immediate opening for a temporary part-time Administrative Intern in the Public Works Department. Under general direction, provides support to senior management by planning, coordinating and organizing special projects; conducting surveys and studies of industry trends and best practices; reviewing technical reports and synthesizes complex or ambiguous data. The position also performs detailed research and analyses, summarizes findings in reports and memoranda, and formulates recommendations. Provides support during budget development process as a member of the department’s budget team, and provides day-to-day budget management support by carefully monitoring the department’s operating budget, and playing a hands-on role with the department’s procurement process by generating, maintaining, and receiving against purchase orders. Also provides exceptional customer service to residents in person, over the telephone, and via written correspondence. Develops productive working relationships with other departments, officials, and consultants, and collaborates on inter-departmental project teams. Prepares and develops presentations on assigned projects and programs; also provides administrative support to the Director of Public Works and/or his designee(s), and performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Employment as the Administrative Intern is intended to supplement graduate study in Public Administration, or a related field. Candidates, therefore, must be enrolled in a Master of Public Administration or similar graduate-level program, as of January 2013. Successful candidate must have excellent customer service skills, a passion for public service, and a solid work ethic. Candidates should possess strong oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, and well-developed analytical skills. Previous professional work experience is a plus. Top candidates will be able to demonstrate an ability to effectively administer assigned projects and perform both complex and routine administrative work with speed and accuracy; must also be proficient in MS Office and related business software programs. Valid driver’s license is also required. Candidates must be able to commit to working a minimum of 20-25 hours per week, with occasional evening meetings required. The expectation is that the selected candidate will commit to the position for one to two years.
PAY/BENEFITS:
Starting pay is $16/hr, with no fringe benefits.
