APWA Transportation Committee Message from the Chair Debbie Hale

Welcome to the APWA Transportation Committee webpage! Transportation is one of the key issue areas of interest for APWA members, and this year promises to be a busy one for transportation activities. Our federal transportation act has expired and we face a highway trust fund that will run out of money unless it is receives a new influx of funds. There is widespread recognition that a more stable, increased revenue source for transportation is needed, but in this election year there is little support for such a program. Meanwhile, the Federal Highway Administration has heard our call for streamlined project delivery processes, and has launched a new Every Day Counts initiative that it is taking to summits across the country. FHWA is also giving a new emphasis to road safety in its Towards Zero Deaths program. The APWA Transportation Committee is working hard to give local public works professionals a voice in all of these developments.

The Transportation Committee has set the following goals for the 2010-2011 year:
  • Streamline Federally-Funded Project Delivery
  • Stabilize and Increase Federal Funding
  • Improve Transportation Safety
  • Promote Sustainable Transportation
  • Support Winter Maintenance Activities
  • Coordinate Transportation and Emergency Response Procedures
  • Improve Member Communications
  • Increase Our Input on Federal Legislation
  • Educate Our Members On the Latest Transportation Issues and Innovative Practices
  • Increase Partnerships with Those Conducting Related Activities
We have three very active subcommittees that are working on these activities and one interdisciplinary task force that we are coordinating with; use the links below to find out more information about their activities:
  • Federal Transportation Act (SAFETEA-LU) Reauthorization Task Force
  • Transportation Safety Subcommittee
  • Transportation Sustainability Subcommittee
  • Winter Maintenance Subcommittee
We are always looking for volunteers to help out, particularly at the subcommittee level. Please contact me, or our subcommittee chairs, if you have ideas for how APWA can provide the best information and service on transportation issues to our members. Thank you!
