Often times when citizens are asked to define public infrastructure, they mention roads, bridges, water, wastewater and schools. The majority of the general public, to include our community leaders, forget that our public buildings are also a part of America’s failing infrastructure. As chair of the Facilities and Grounds Committee, one of my goals is to highlight that facilities along with the grounds associated with them are also critical components of our nation’s infrastructure that we need not overlook. As leaders in your organization, I encourage you to educate your leaders and your community that public buildings also should factor in the conversation of infrastructure repair cost.
We as technical committee members do not have all the answers; however what we do have is the willingness to serve the membership of APWA. Therefore, if there are specific issues that you would like to receive some input or guidance on, please take the time to reach out to one of us. Our committee is a resource to you. Please remember you are not alone in your journey as there are endless resources at your disposal. If you are having trouble identifying resources for the challenges that you are facing, then please make us aware. I would also like to inform you that we see the membership of APWA as a resource for us to utilize as well. We want to hear about the creative solutions you have discovered along your journey and the lessons that you have already learned and are willing to share with others. In other words, we are also here to learn from you.
I will leave you with an open invitation to contact me at any time to share your innovative thoughts and ideas about what your organization is doing in regards to facilities and grounds. If you are interested in getting involved with the work of our committee, please let me know.
I look forward to serving you over the next year.
