Welcome Message

Welcome to the Student Outreach Network webpage!   Student Outreach is one of the most important initiatives for APWA. The recently-formed Student Outreach Network is working to establish a core group of dedicated APWA members to liaison with students at colleges, universities and technical colleges to educate them about public works and APWA.  The ultimate goal of the Network is to help students form APWA student chapters at their schools.

Attracting and retaining the next generations of public works leaders is a priority for APWA at the National and local levels.  APWA identified a need to increase its presence in colleges and universities, and to educate students about career opportunities in the public works field.  The mission of the Student Outreach Network is to educate students about public works, inspire them to get involved and transform the future.

We are gearing up for the 2014/2015 school year and spent the summer investigating interested schools and developing student programs.  The Network is currently working to develop student chapters Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Missouri, Kansas, Wisconsin, Florida and Minnesota.

Interested student and current APWA members can contact me at any time to ask questions or to find out how to get involved.  Join us as we work to Educate, Inspire and Transform!

  • "I joined the APWA Student Chapter (at the University of Minnesota) because it gave me the best opportunity to learn about the professional side of Public Works and engineering as well as provide great networking opportunities at a time when finding a job was a top priority. Through APWA I have made connections and friends that not only helped me find a job, but also helped enhance my work life.

"Being thrust into the work force without knowing anyone can be very intimidating, especially for us timid engineering majors, but with the help of the people I met at the APWA (student chapter) brown bags, technical tours, the APWA student social, and my favorite, the golf event, that transition has been rather fun. I certainly do not know how to solve every engineering problem, but I now know someone who does."
