Technical Specialty (Future Release)

The Technical Specialty career path is for individuals interested in specializing in one or more functional areas within public works. There are three levels in the Operator and Technician Specialist (OTS) program: OTS I, OTS II and OTS III. The OTS III offers a program for individuals interested in management within a specialized functional area in public works.  The OTS III currently houses three certification programs offered by APWA: Certified Public Infrastructure Inspector, Certified Public Fleet Professional, and Certified Stormwater Manager. Additional effort will be made to partner with other associations that provide certification programs for other functional areas.

These programs within the Donald C. Stone Center are under development and will be available in 2014. APWA is seeking strategic partnerships with APWA chapter institutes and organizations that represent the best academic, government and association professional development programs in the functional areas pertinent to public works. Like the Leadership and Management career path, the Technical Specialty career path participants will develop a personal professional development plan and have mentors available to help guide them through the program.

The vision for the program, once mature, is that career and professional opportunities will be available in the trades so that younger professionals will find a place to  jumpstart their careers within the public works community. Likewise, the vision is that training for crew members will be an important part of the OTS I program .

If you are interested in being part of the pilot program  for the Technical Specialty career path, please contact the DCS Center at dcscenter@apwa.net.
