INTERNATIONAL IDEA EXCHANGE

Public Works Delegation to India

APWA Past President

As Past President of APWA, I am honoured to invite members to participate in an international professional and cultural program through People to People Ambassador Programs to India in October 2007.

The Republic of India is a country with a population of one billion people spread over a land frontier of 15,200 km and a coastline of 7,516 km. Bounded by the majestic Himalayan ranges in the north and edged by a spectacular coastline surrounded by three seas, India is a vivid kaleidoscope of landscapes, magnificent historical sites and royal cities, golden beaches, misty mountain retreats, colourful people, rich culture and festivities.

The cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur are known as the "Golden Triangle." This group perfectly captures the pageantry of India—the marble symphony of the Taj Mahal, the imperial elegance of New Delhi and the splendours of the desert city of Jaipur. Every city offers its unique blend of sights, sounds and experiences from the opulence of the Mughal Empire to the vibrant life of modern India.

As an emerging superpower in the world, India is facing challenges in providing key infrastructure services to its population. The delegation will discover the extent of these challenges and will be able to contribute their expertise to our Indian counterparts.

The initial topics for the program are:

  • Rehabilitation and expansion of transportation infrastructure, including road, rail and air
  • Provision of consulting services in India and overseas
  • Sanitary waste removal and treatment
  • Environmental challenges
  • Sustainable development

These topics will be further refined as the team is formed to incorporate delegates' specialized areas of interest and expertise.

I was fortunate to lead a People to People delegation to China in 2005 where we visited the cities of Beijing, Gualin and Shanghai. The delegates who participated all felt it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience (see Reporter article April 2006).

Anyone interested in participating can get further information at www.ambassadorprograms.org or contact me at (250) 360-3092 or dkalynchuk@crd.bc.ca.
