Fleet Services Committee—always on the move

Ann Daniels
Director of Technical Services
APWA Kansas City Office

If the old saying "A moving target is harder to hit" is true, members of the Fleet Services Committee would have no chance of being caught in the crosshairs. This very active and productive group of APWA volunteers has successfully completed another productive year. Committee members, led by Cathy Radek, Chair, have maintained a high level of energy as they worked to complete their Business Plan.

Throughout the year, a continued major emphasis has been guiding the fledgling Certified Public Fleet Professional program to the point of launch at Congress in Kansas City. Many hours of dedicated effort have been expended by Cathy Radek, Sam Lamerato, Sharon Subadan, Judy Workman, Bill Ramsey and Clay Sharp, with guidance from At-Large Director Larry Frevert. Sometimes the wheels of progress have needed greasing to keep the process moving, but the final result will be a very professional, well-constructed, and ongoing program which will allow public fleet managers to earn this respected credential.

All the details of the program will be launched at Congress in Kansas City, so be certain you watch for the exciting announcements prior to and during this event. An educational session on "The Certified Fleet Professional" will be presented by Becky Stein, Certification Manager, on Sunday, September 10 from 4:00-4:50 p.m.

Not only will the Certification program be launched, but exciting educational sessions have been planned which will be of interest to anyone with a responsibility for purchasing or operating fleet facilities or vehicles. One highlighted session to be presented is "Hybrid Vehicle Technology...What's Available and Where We Are Headed" and will feature presenters coming directly from the industry. GM, Ford and Honda will all share information about their products. This will be a Super Session so you'll have plenty of time to get all the latest information and ask questions. This session will be held on Tuesday, September 12 from 3:30-5:00 p.m.

The third session presented by the committee, "What is the Best Choice for your Fleet?", will be discussing Fuel Alternatives, specifically Biodiesel and Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel. John Scharfbillig, Fleet Manager, MN Department of Transportation, will be the presenter. Mark your planner for this session on Tuesday, September 12 from 1:00-2:15 p.m.

The exhibit floor will see a new face with the addition of a booth from Chrysler. Now's your opportunity to check out their products firsthand. We welcome Chrysler and appreciate the efforts of Sam Lamerato, committee member, in helping to bring them to our exposition. Each year we hear requests for "more rolling stock on the exhibit floor." Your support by visiting the booth and talking with Chrysler's representatives will help to encourage more participation in the future. Be sure to stop by and take a good look.

If fleet services is your major responsibility, you will want to check out the Fleet Open Forum which will be held on Tuesday, September 12 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. This is the perfect opportunity for you to meet your peers from across North America, share successes, discuss new processes and products, and get more information about the Certification program.

A very successful Click, Listen & Learn program titled "Fleet Utilization—Optimizing Your Resources" was presented in June. Participants from more than 50 agencies participated and a wide variety of topics were discussed. Judy Workman, committee member, served as the Moderator for the session. Each year an effort is made to include at least one fleet-related CL&L. If you have a topic you'd like to see addressed, send it to any member of the Fleet Services Committee (roster is found on the website at www.apwa.net/About/TechSvcs/Fleet).

The responsibility for keeping public agency equipment and vehicles rolling and working efficiently lies with the public fleet departments. The members of the Fleet Services Committee invite you to join them at Congress, and throughout the year, in determining how best to keep your fleet in topnotch form and "Always on the Move."
