Breakfast of Champions

Susan M. Hann, P.E., AICP
Deputy City Manager
City of Palm Bay, Florida
Chair, APWA Leadership & Management Committee

Last year, the APWA Diversity Committee and the Leadership & Management Committee worked together to bring to Congress the inaugural "Women in Public Works" event. Although I was initially skeptical of a gender-oriented event, the session drew about 70 participants (women and a few men) who spent an hour talking about real issues in public works—mentoring, networking, creating flexibility in the workplace, encouraging students to enter the public works field, building your career and escaping stereotypes. All of these issues are important to any public works professional—not just women.

So, this year, the committees are building on the success of last year's session to bring Congress participants another opportunity to get together and discuss the issues facing professionals in the public works profession. The Monday morning session will include breakfast, a brief speaker regarding career development and more opportunities to network. This session is a great way to meet new friends while conversing about everyday issues in public works!

So, if you'd like to Chat & Chew, make sure you register for the Women in Public Works breakfast—Monday morning, 7:00-8:30 a.m. If you'd like more information before committing your $15, please contact Ann Daniels at (816) 595-5223 or adaniels@apwa.net. You can also call or e-mail me and I'll tell you about last year's experience. Your investment of time and money will be very worthwhile.
