You may not know Al Olson, the Iowa Chapter’s recent recipient of its Distinguished Service Award, who I refer to as “my public works guy,” because he was, until recently, the Public Works Administrator for the City of Ankeny, Iowa, which I proudly call home.
However, if you view his recent presentation to the Iowa Chapter posted in the video link below, you will certainly find out who and what he is, and why Al Olson was presented with the Distinguished Service Award from the Iowa Chapter. This video is a real tribute to Al, his life in public works, and the excellent professional and life philosophies and motivation that Al exhibits daily for all around him, including his colleagues in public works, friends and family.
Al often repeats his goal of “first and foremost giving back to others” in public works in Iowa, in APWA as an organization, as well as in life. His theme is often said by others, but not often acted on, and Al has “walked the walk”. As you will see, Al also shares his pride in the chapter and in the public works mission in our communities as he fights a personal battle with brain cancer.
As President-elect of APWA, I can’t think of a better and more deserving person than Al Olson to have awarded the Iowa Distinguished Service Award. I am very proud of my good friend and all he’s strived toward and accomplished for the Iowa Chapter, for APWA National, and in his life. His extremely positive attitude is exhibited in his presentation. Please take a moment to review the video, and let him enlighten you on his journey. It is well worth the time.
