Partial Federal Government Shutdown in Effect

Congress failed to reach agreement September 30 on a stop-gap federal spending measure needed to keep federal programs and operations funded in the new fiscal year (FY), which began October 1. The temporary spending bill, known as a continuing resolution (CR), is intended to give Congress more time to complete work on FY14 appropriations bills. Without the CR, federal programs, services and functions not deemed essential are required to cease operation. As reported and regularly updated in the popular press, there is no definite timetable for resolving the dispute between the House and Senate.
