APWA is pleased to announce the release of the three remaining public works-specific independent study courses available through the Emergency Management Institute (EMI). In addition to the first program, The Public Works Role in Emergency Management released in December 2010, the new courses address emergency planning, damage assessment and disaster recovery.
In 2009, FEMA requested APWA’s participation in a Task Force which would conduct a gap analysis of emergency training for public works professionals. Several members whose agencies had experienced a variety of disasters met at the EMI campus. The final report from the Task Force recommended the development of four public works-specific courses. FEMA subsequently approved funding for the development of those courses. APWA worked closely with the firm which developed these programs to ensure the content was relevant and accurate for public works professionals. Additionally, the subject matter expert hired by the firm is a former Chair of the APWA Emergency Management Committee, further assuring the validity of the content. Each program was pilot tested by APWA members (with a variety of knowledge and experience levels) prior to release.
We encourage you and appropriate staff to use the links below to access these study courses.
