APWA Chapters and Members Helping Those in Need

Several APWA Chapters and individual members have asked about sending financial contributions to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy. APWA recommends doing so through donations to American Red Cross Disaster Relief. “As with Hurricane Katrina and the March, 2011 Japanese tsunami and nuclear disaster, our members want to help in any way they can,” said APWA Executive Director Peter King. “In addition to members volunteering their advice and expertise to colleagues up and down the Eastern Seaboard through the APWA Emergency Management Peer Matching Database, many have opened their wallets and want to make donations to help.”

Financial donations help the American Red Cross provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance to those affected by disasters like Hurricane Sandy. To donate, you can visit www.redcross.org, call 1-800-RED-CROSS, or text the word “REDCROSS” to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Contributions may also be sent to local Red Cross chapters, or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013.

The Canadian Red Cross is accepting donations for Sandy Relief with funds going directly to the United States recovery operations through the Hurricane Sandy – USA fund. The Canadian Red Cross is also accepting fundsto support hurricane response across the region through the Hurricanes 2012 fund. Donations can be made online at www.redcross.ca/helpnow, at local branch offices or by calling 1-800-418-1111.The Canadian Red Cross will be deploying volunteers to support the American Red Cross shelter operations in New York, and additional volunteers and stocks of pre-positioned supplies are ready to be deployed if needed.

Public works professionals continue to provide critical response services to those affected by Hurricane Sandy and will continue to do so over the coming days, weeks and months.
