The Magic of Storytelling - Making the Public Works Story Compelling
Storying is a practical, feet-on-the ground discipline and is as useful and critical a leadership skill as budgeting, marketing, and managing operations. Stories, it turns out, are how the human brain constructs reality. They are so powerful that recent studies indicate that the brain doesn't discriminate between stories and "reality." The root of what we experience in our lives is in the stories that we tell about ourselves and others. Think for a moment about the public works story. What are the stories that we tell our residents, elected officials and each other about public works and the essential role we play in the community's well-being? Do we let outside factors drive the narrative or are we deliberate "tellers" of public works' powerful story? In this presentation Bob Allen, Founder and Chief Storytelling Officer of the innovative, multi-faceted media and experience design firm called IDEAS, will explore the native storytelling ability we all have and how we can bring it forward, in these critical times, as a powerful tool for the advancement of public works.

Exponential Times, Exponential Threats
When Lisa Monaco attended President Obama's daily briefings, the question he usually asked of her was "What are you worried about today?" Monaco says the answer was almost always cyber security. As she explains, while the Internet has given the world better ways to work, play, and share ideas across borders, it has also rapidly expanded the so-called "attack surface" of the United States - a fact that nation states, terrorist actors, hackers, and thieves have been eager to seize upon. With this talk, Lisa Monaco draws on her time at the forefront of combating national security and homeland security threats. Sharing stories from her time in the Oval Office and the Situation Room, she lays out the current state of the cyber threat in clear terms and explains how it is more sophisticated than ever before, touching on things like: The diverse nature of the cyber threat from nation states to "hacktivists" - and why, for example, ISIS is recruiting terrorists and hackers. Aggressive actors testing the boundaries of cyberwarfare. The implication of cyber threats on public works services and critical infrastructure such as roadways, bridges, transit, and other transportation systems, water and wastewater facilities, and public buildings and community spaces.
