APWA Members Advocate in the Nation's Capital

The APWA Government Affairs Committee (GAC) held a joint meeting in Washington, D.C. with three APWA Technical Committees-- Water Resources Management, Engineering and Technology, and Transportation. The meeting was held April 11-13, 2017 to provide meeting participants with the opportunity to directly engage with numerous high-level Congressional Committee staff and representatives from Federal agencies.  A highlight was a meeting between APWA members and U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, who addressed questions posed by meeting attendees on topics ranging from the benefit of Public/ Private Partnerships (or P3s), the possibility of an increase in the gas tax, and the importance of continuing the funding of public works and emergency management professionals.  Meeting participants also met with representatives from the Federal Highway Administration, the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and FirstNet.
