APWA’s certification programs
deliver an opportunity for members and nonmembers to earn credentials which demonstrate advanced knowledge in their field. Certifications are available in three areas – public fleet management
, public infrastructure inspection
, and stormwater management
. Two APWA certificate programs also provide opportunities for individuals to earn advanced credentials. The Winter Maintenance Supervisor Certificate program
is available at APWA’s annual North American Snow Conference and may also be offered at your local chapter. Members and nonmembers also have the opportunity to earn a professional certificate by successfully completing a nationally-approved Public Works Institute
On the agency level, the accreditation
credential is available to any public agency interested in utilizing APWA’s voluntary, self-motivated approach to objectively evaluate, verify and recognize compliance with the recommended public works management practices.
APWA’s Click, Listen & Learn programs
are webinars which are free to members and available to nonmembers for a nominal fee. Additional e-learning programs are available from APWA national, and from local chapters and branches. The calendar

Leadership Training and Graduate Studies
The Emerging Leaders Academy
provides opportunities for individuals to hone their leadership and management skills in a public works context. For those interested in graduate studies, APWA has also collaborated with Norwich University to offer a Master of Public Administration-Public Works and Sustainability concentration
online degree program.
Continuing Education Credits
Many professional designations or credentials require continuing education
in order to maintain the designation. APWA is an International Association of Continuing Education & Training (IACET) authorized continuing education provider. Therefore, APWA is able to offer Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for all of its national events and for pre-approved chapter events. The IACET designation signifies to state licensing authorities and other entities that APWA meets the highest standards and definitions of continuing education and training.
National Public Works Week
National Public Works Week (NPWW)
is recognized in the United States and Canada, and many state/provincial, county, and local agencies hold events in their community to provide information about operations, equipment and the professionals who design, build and maintain their public infrastructure.
