Leadership and Management Committee
A message from William Sterling, Leadership and Management Committee Chair, 2007-2008
Public Works professionals are the foundation of successful communities. The strength of a public works professional correlates directly with the strength of their leadership and management skills.
Welcome to the Leadership/Management Committee. The Committee's primary function is to provide resources to assist the APWA members in matters relating to public works administrative management. The Committee welcomes any input from the APWA community. Be sure to watch for the upcoming articles in the Reporter, entitled "Recipes For Success"; more tips on how improve your skills as leader/manager and as cooks.
The Committee is sponsoring a Mentoring Program. This program can be valuable for both emerging leaders and our veteran members. More details can be accessed by clicking on the Mentoring page. Another program of interest to our new members is the Emerging Leaders Academy.
We value your input and appreciate your questions so please do not hesitate to contact any of the committee members (see the
committee roster for email addresses), or Ann Daniels, the committee's APWA staff liaison.
Core Competencies
The APWA Leadership and Management Committee surveyed public works officials and those who employ them to determine what they
believe to be the most important characteristics of an effective public works leader. It is assumed that technical knowledge
in the field of a public works is a given or the leader would not have been chosen for the position, the committee has identified
the following core competencies from the survey results.

The APWA Leadership and Management Committee recently concluded its series of articles on public works leadership entitled
"The Baker's Dozen." However, now that we've finished the first thirteen derived from our initial survey, the committee decided to
develop others from that source which lend themselves to those who may see themselves more as "managers" than "leaders." This series
of articles — proclaimed "The Baker's Menu" — will give you a taste for supplemental leadership and especially management skills. If you
have some suggestions as to management traits that should be included on the menu, please let us know.
